A New Donation Matching Challenge in Honor of Our Earliest Supporters

DONATE TODAY

Joe and Helen Pickering, my wife’s parents, were among the first donors to the Daily Yonder. When we were not sure we could get through year two, they were full of enthusiasm and encouragement. In the shaky times you need pals.

Joe was in the Navy in World War II. Helen was editor-in-chief of the Stanford Daily when the boys were overseas. They met in college. She went from journalism, to motherhood, to running the office of U.S. Representative Pete McCloskey and writing the food column for the Palo Alto Weekly. Helen became a longtime board member and advocate for both Silicon Valley Planned Parenthood and the groundbreaking Tahoe-Baikul Institute.

Joe played football for the Stanford freshman team, started a business, became a community leader, and at 90 took over as the bongo percussionist for the Avenidas Ukulele Band.

Helen lived to 90 and Joe to 92. That last year, Joe issued a Daily Yonder challenge. He donated $5,000 in honor of Helen to be matched by our readers. Maybe a week later he matched it himself. This Giving Tuesday, Joe and Helen’s daughter, Mimi Pickering, and I would like to continue the challenge Joe started.

Already, Daily Yonder readers have secured our publication $10,000 in matching funds from NewsMatch, with more available the more we raise. Given this success, Mimi and I would like to up the ante. In honor of Joe and Helen, we will match up to an additional $10,000 in reader contributions from Daily Yonder pals until December 31. It is a way we can back the top-notch team of Daily Yonder writers and media producers, join forces with this community of Daily Yonder supporters, and honor the legacy of Joe and Helen.
